UPDATE LISTS WITH RATINGS OF NEW OR UPGRADED PAINTS

A message from Hilary Page…

Here’s is the latest version of the "LISTS" that supplements the comprehensive information in my book "Hilary Page’s Guide to Watercolor Paints". It is a free service that is designed to be used with the Guide. My intention is that you print off these lists and store them within the covers of your Guide to complete your paint reference material. I will mass mail the "LISTS" at intervals- especially when I have the test results of a new line of paints. When this happens just discard the previous version. So let me know if you change your email address. Copying the information for commercial use, including the internet, is prohibited.

If you do not own a copy of my Guide you may order a specially autographed copy direct from me for the special price of $21 + $4 S&H (Texas residents add $1.66 sales tax ). Note- Those living outside the USA pay $10 shipping (surface mail unless the there is an air service to your country for $10 )

Make check payable (US dollars or international money order in US dollars) to:

Hilary Page: 12451 Queensbury Lane, Houston, Texas 77024-4138 USA Thanks!

I hope you find the information to be useful…Please tell your friends about the Guide and Update LISTS. Everyone needs his/her own copy for reference! Also please let me know if you come across paints that are not listed or that have been changed. Thanks and Happy Paint Buying prior to Happy Painting!

Hilary Page

P.S. You might be interested in my other books which are "Watercolor Right from the Start" and "Color Right from the Start". At present I am working on a portrait and figure book. Also if you would like to read several of my articles and see information on my forthcoming workshops please check my web site at www.hilarypage.com. March 2004

INDIVIDUAL PAINT RATINGS: A three star rating is given when are lightfast and meet the ASTM minimum standards. A three star rating means the paints are perfectly adequate and lightfast. The rating does not denote the upper end of the scale, the very best paints. These are indicated by my personal comments. As of May 2002 I am using an F rating i.e."Failed" in place of the rather euphemistic NR "Not Rated" rating for a pretty bad paint!

COMMENTS: Comments are given when there is something additional to say about the paint that might be useful to you. A paint without a comment means that the paint is perfectly standard and OK. The comments supplement the ratings.

BRAND STANDARDS & RATINGS: In addition to the ratings for individual paints, I will be issuing BRAND STANDARDS and RATINGS for all brands. This will give you yet another way of gauging the paints on the market.

Cotman 12 Paints 8ml tubes 27 fl oz

These 17 out of the 50 paint line have been upgraded. Cotman paints are Winsor & Newton’s "student" brand paints. . Bear this in mind when looking at the ratings for these paints. A three star rating is given when the paints are perfectly adequate. They do not indicate the upper end of the scale which are indicated by my personal comments. Cotman paints have less tinting strength than the superior Winsor & Newton "Artists’ quality paints which are covered in their entirety in the Guide. The Cotman range is very reasonably priced especially considering that expensive pigments such as Cobalt Blue, Cadmium red and Cerulean blue are used The upgraded Cotman paints are lightfast and replace the not lightfast paints from the original line. These paints are perfectly adequate but they do not rank amongst the superior lines. Brand Rating= Three star*** out of a possible five star rating.

Holbein 24 new paints: 5ml (.17floz) & 15ml tubes These paints have been added to the original 84 Holbein paints that are evaluated in my Guide. Brand Rating=Four Star**** out of a possible five star rating. The paints are extremely well made and the range contains many of my favorite paints that I use a lot. Holbein missed getting a five star rating because the range contains some (unmarked) fugitive paints. These are the "Bright" fluorescent pinks and mauve as well as a few very paints with unacceptably poor lightfastness that are identified in my Guide. Holbein’s Antique Irodori paints are listed below.

Holbein Antique Irodori Watercolor paints: 48 new paints: 15ml tubes . The Irodori paints are in addition to the 108 artists watercolor paints 84 of which are evaluated in my Guide0. Characteristically these paints apply smoothly. They contain more than average extender of white making them dense and//or pastel. This characteristic makes them lift readily when wetted and wiped off. And so they generally would not be good for glazing. The brand does not contain the expensive metallic element paints such as cobalts of cadmiums. It does not contain quinacridones apart from PV 19 in a mixture in the paint named "Pink"and PR122 mixed with Dioxazine in "Magenta". Many of the pigments used are fugitive as noted in the list below.

Brand Rating (pending) out of a possible five star rating. The predicted low rating is because of the number of fugitive pigments used. Samples received in March 6th. 2001 . Paint samples made Oct. 18. (delay due to heavy schedule) Results posted May 30th 2002.

American Journey (Cheap Joe) 53 Paints 37ml tubes

All but one made with lightfast pigments : Smooth, pasty consistency. The range contains a limited number of individual pigments and so many of the colors are reached through mixtures. I have only made individual comments about the paints that have special features. The paints are reasonably inexpensive even though expensive pigments such as Cobalt Blue, Cadmium red and Cerulean blue are used. The range is of a perfectly adequate, standard quality, but they do not rank amongst the superior lines. Brand Rating= Three star*** out of a possible five star rating.

M. Graham: Note two new paints and one discontinued paint for a total of 36 paints: 15ml tubes. The medium used in the range has been reformulated so the paints retain their fine color clarity but are now not so strong staining and are more user friendly. I have completed the handling tests and am in the process of conducting lightfastness tests. The manufacturer has reformulated the medium to enhance the handling characteristics. I have redone the handling tests and lightfastness tests on the paints that did not receive a three star rating in my Guide.
