IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL READERS of

“COLOR RIGHT FROM THE START” by Hilary Page

Since "Color Right from the Start" was first published in 1994 by Watson-Guptill publications, some new and more lightfast pigments have been introduced into the market. Accordingly, manufacturers have upgraded and re-named their paints to reflect the use of the improved pigments. I suggest that you use the newly recommended paints listed here for the demonstrations and exercises described in the book.

The following is a conversion chart of the paints that have been changed. The left hand column shows the original paints named in the book on pages 46 and 48, and used throughout, and the right hand column shows the recommended, improved paints that will give you identical results in your paintings.

I have used Winsor & Newton "Artists" paints unless otherwise stated. You will notice a column of letters and numbers recorded after each paint name. These are the internationally recognized Color Index Names that are displayed on each tube or pan of paint, though you may need a magnifying glass to see them! They are listed so you can find the identical paint in another brand should you wish to do so. It is important to use paints with the exact pigment listed to get equivalent results in your paintings.

An “Update ‘00” is also available which contains the results of an additional 200 paints that have been introduced since the Guide was published in 1997. (see my web site)
